The Point Loma Garden Club Competes
The Point Loma Garden Club presented their 26th Standard Flower Show “Flowers, Art and All That Jazz” on Friday, Oct. 16, from 1 PM to 5PM, and on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 AM to 4 PM.
I stopped by All Souls’ Episcopal Church (1475 Catalina Blvd., San Diego) this past Sunday to take a look at the winners. I was there about 30 minutes early so I broke into the kitchen to sample some coffee and was pleasantly surprised to see that the staff there, along with the priest, Mike, were making bread. They make bread every Sunday, sell it at their mass and take the money down to OB to give to the homeless. Unrelated to the Point Loma Garden club, but, cool. I was treated to a coffee and a strikingly interesting chat in Religious Theology. If you’re wincing, stop.
Pleasantly surprised and newly caffeinated, I walked into the Gooden Hall and was taken aback by the number and beauty of the arrangements and horticulture exhibits. The average age of each woman is about 60, so they really know their stuff and take flowers and gardening very seriously. A former water-colorist, Mary Bateman, joined the Garden Club last year. She is in charge of membership and decided that she would enter the contest this year. She swept the competition with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbon in 3 categories. I would have to say that her most intriguing entry was a phenomenal use of found flowers designed for the “Black Bottom Irish” category.
The piece had dried corn, warped, and molded tree bark. Every flower that she used, she found, dried and sculpted. She had the only piece like that there. A great example of resourcefulness and very fitting for this economy. If you are interested in more info on the Point Loma Garden Club you can visit their site at: http://www.plgc.org/
